Ricardo (Ric) Castillo was the nefarious younger brother of Cruz Castillo. His name was first mentioned in 1988 after he caused his mother financial ruin. About a year later, he was said to be living in Paris with his new wife Hollis and their baby daughter Charisse. Cruz's baby, Adriana, was still missing at this time, and recurring dreams drove his wife, Eden, to believe that Ric's baby was actually Adriana. Eden and her younger sister, Kelly Capwell, got themselves hired at Ric's house as a nanny and maid, respectively, in order to prove Eden's theory about Charisse. Cruz also came to Paris, but the reunion between him and Ric was very strained. Ric seemed like a shady character at first. Not only was he involved in diamond smuggling, he also kept flirting with Kelly, triggering his wife's jealousy. Ultimately, it was confirmed that Charisse was indeed Adriana. Hollis had bought the child on the black market because her inheritance depended on her having a healthy child. Ric didn't know about any of this until the showdown with Hollis. After giving Adriana back to Cruz and Eden, Hollis slipped into the Seine and drowned. Ric was unable to rescue her. Now a widower, Ric went home to Santa Barbara, just like Cruz, Eden, Kelly and Adriana did. He took a suite in the Capwell Hotel and had a brief affair with Sandra Mills, a psychic who was obsessed with Cruz. This affair, along with Ric's continued involvement in shady deals, further alienated the Castillo brothers. Much of the conflict between Cruz and Ric stemmed from them being abandoned by their father, Rafael Castillo, when they were young. When Cruz and Eden searched for Rafael in Acapulco, Ric found out and joined them. They all became involved with a dangerous magician named Dr. Mephisto. Ultimately, everyone was saved, except for Mephisto, who Ric shot in order to save Cruz's life. Rafael reconciled with his sons and moved to Santa Barbara. Meanwhile, Ric's flirtation with Kelly continued. The two began working together to learn about the hostile takeover of Capwell Enterprises planned by Robert Barr. Claiming that he had dirt on Cruz, Robert was able to blackmail Ric into spying on the Capwells. Ric and Kelly were about to make love when Kelly's father, C.C. Capwell, informed her of Ric's betrayal. Kelly broke with Ric and wound up romantically involved with Robert Barr. Nevertheless, Ric continued to be in love with Kelly for a long time. Ric's next love interest was Tawny, the daughter of a crooked businessman named Harland Richards. Soon after Ric started working for Harland, he went missing under mysterious circumstances. A few weeks later, Cruz finally found his brother. Ric and Tawny's relationship came to an abrupt end when Ric learned from his mother that Harland Richards was his real father. Thus Tawny was Ric's half sister! Shocked, Ric broke things off with Tawny and left Santa Barbara. |
