Interviews & Articles > THE YEAR IN REVIEW

It was another Emmy-winning year for the NBC soap Santa Barbara, one that started on an upbeat note with the birth of Cruz and Eden's first child Adriana. But from that point on, things took on all the twists and turns of a runaway rollercoaster for not only the Castillos, but for the entire population of SB. The year saw a comedic tour de force by Nancy Lee Grahn and Lane Davies which culminated with the long-awaited nuptials of their characters Julia and Mason; the Emmy Award-winning performance of Marcy Walker and her equally powerful costar A Martinez as the distraught parents searching for their kidnapped infant daughter, and the introduction of several pivotal characters which changed the direction of the show. But amid all the drama, one character has caused the most commotion – not only sending shockwaves throughout the already unpredictable hamlet, but throughout all of daytime!

With the introduction of Roscoe Born and his powerful portrayal of Robert Barr, the writers of SB have finally given the show a man of mystery and intrigue. From day one, the secretive Barr has kept viewers riveted to their screens. His persona was built slowly, starting as a clone of Donald Trump, but developing into a multi-faceted temptation for the lovingly loyal Eden Castillo and more importantly for the equally loyal viewing audience. The unfolding of Eden's long-forgotten romance with Robert has been spellbinding to say the least, capturing the imagination of everyone involved. We have empathized with Eden's plight, her battle over whether she should regret the missed opportunity of her first real love Robert, or stay with the man who changed her life, saw her potential and gave her happiness and contentment – Cruz. The writers have done the seemingly impossible – dangled the idea of Eden leaving Cruz for another man in front of the character and the audience, and amazingly enough, persuaded many (and perhaps eventually, Eden) to wander in his direction.
