Brief Character History
Virile and handsome, Joe Perkins was Santa Barbara's original heartthrob. In the first episode, he was released from jail after a five-year term for the murder of rich boy Channing Capwell Jr., the brother of Joe's then-fiancée Kelly Capwell. Kelly had caught Joe standing over Channing's body with a gun and it was her testimony that had sent Joe to jail. Nevertheless, Joe didn't commit the crime, and he returned to his home city of Santa Barbara to clear his name. He still loved Kelly and wanted to reclaim her, knowing that her family was responsible for her testimony against him. Unfortunately for Joe, Kelly was now engaged to Peter Flint.

Joe's return home didn't sit too well with his father, John, who believed Joe was guilty of Channing's murder. Around the same time, Joe was approached by a mysterious bearded man named Dominic, who offered to help him find Channing's true killer. The two met several times at an abandoned warehouse before Joe learned that Dominic was really a woman. He never found out that Dominic was actually Sophia Capwell, Kelly's presumed dead mother. Meanwhile, Joe was hired by Augusta Lockridge, a wealthy older woman, to become her handyman. Joe and Augusta had a brief affair.

Eventually, Joe was able to convince Kelly of his innocence. They resumed their love affair, much to the dismay of Peter Flint. Hoping to get Joe back in prison, Peter planted cocaine on Joe's motorcycle and arranged for the police to find it. When Joe fled from the police, he wound up being missing at sea and presumed dead. He was rescued by Russian spies. He then reunited with Kelly and allowed most of the town to believe that he was still dead, because of the drug charges against him. Finally realizing that Joe was innocent, John made amends with his son.

Since everyone believed Joe was already dead, Peter plotted to kill Joe. He lured Joe to a wildlife preserve where the two men struggled over Peter's gun. As a result, Peter was critically wounded. Although Joe was arrested for the shooting, he escaped during an earthquake that shook Santa Barbara. Later, Joe was devastated to learn that his father had been killed in the quake. Believing that he was going to die, Peter cleared Joe of any involvement in Channing's murder.

Once Joe was exonerated, he finally married Kelly. For his part, Peter went crazy and murdered several women who looked like Kelly, becoming known as the Carnation Killer. In the end, Joe was taken hostage by Peter. While Kelly attempted to rescue Joe from Peter's clutches, Peter shot Joe and critically wounded him. Sadly, Joe died in the hospital.

Kelly was devastated over her husband's passing. Although she ultimately managed to move on with her life, she still mentioned Joe from time to time over the years.
