Fans
were shocked and outraged when Eden's psychotic rapist turned out to
be her gynecologist, Dr. Zack Kelton (Leigh
McCloskey). Zack kidnapped Adriana and shortly before dying,
told Cruz the baby was dead. Eden temporarily left town to mourn her
loss, which enabled Marcy Walker to take a maternity leave and give
birth to her real-life child. Soon after Walker returned, SB
went to Paris for some on-location shooting to heighten the mystery
of baby Adriana, who turned up alive and kidnapped by Cruz's
sister-in-law.
The show continued with its tounge-in-cheek
comedy efforts, as Mason Capwell took a trip to heaven which was run
by Joan Crawford (cross dresser Bunny Tagliatti, played by Joe
Marinelli) and then-president of NBC daytime Brian Frons, who
played God! Harley Kozak briefly returned to the show as Mason's
guardian angel, before Mason went back to earth and married Julia
Wainwright.
SB won its second Emmy for
outstanding series. Marcy Walker walked away with the Emmy for
outstanding actress, while co-star Nancy Grahn shared supporting
actress honors with Debbi Morgan of All My Children.
Lane Davies left SB and was replaced
by Terry Lester,
formerly Jack Abbott on The Young and the Restless. Leigh
McCloskey was brought back to the show as district attorney Ethan
Asher, while former primetime star Christopher
Norris (Trapper John, M.D.) played his wife, Laura.
Gina's onscreen family was extended when former General Hospital star
Steve Bond and movie
actress Stella Stevens
joined the cast as Gina's brother and mother. Former Ryan's Hope actor
Roscoe Born was hired to
play mysterious businessman Robert Barr, who briefly caused trouble
in Cruz and Eden's marriage. |

The
show won its third Emmy for outstanding series, while A Martinez
received the Emmy for outstanding actor. Henry
Darrow was named outstanding supporting actor for his
portrayal of Rafael Castillo, Cruz's father.
When Roscoe Born left SB at the
end of his shortterm contract, fans were very upset. The show
managed to lure the actor back to play the dual role of twin
brothers Robert and Quinn. The brothers were embroiled in hot
romances with Kelly, who was now being portrayed by Carrington
Garland, and Flame (Roberta
Bizeau).
Laura tried to murder her husband, but
accidentally killed Sasha Schmidt (Michelle
Nicastro), whose body was temporarily hidden in Mason and
Julia's freezer!
Julia's next storyline involved the
controversial issue of date rape when she accused Dash Nichols (Timothy
Gibbs) of raping her. During a contract dispute, Terry Lester
decided to quit, and Dynasty star Gordon
Thomson assumed the role of Mason.
As the show continued to get low ratings,
John Conboy, who had worked his magic on the soap Capitol,
was named Senior Executive Producer, to work along with producer
Jill Farren Phelps. One of the first things he did was return to
the basic families of the show. He reintroduced the Lockridge
family to the show's canvas by rehiring Nicolas Coster as Lionel
and recasting the roles of Laken (Shell
Danielson) and Minx, who was now being played by Broadway
veteran Janis Paige.
Eventually, Jill Farren Phelps was fired. |

After
their long-pending lawsuit against NBC and New World finally
reached a settlement, Jerome and Bridget Dobson were reinstated as
headwriters. Upon their arrival, the Dobsons brought back the
character of Pamela Capwell as the catalyst to resurrect the
volatile relationship between C.C. and Mason. In an effort to
boost ratings, John Conboy was replaced by One Life to Live producer
Paul Rauch.
Although the Dobsons regained control of
the show, they had no choice but to continue the ill-fated
storyline, began by the previous writers, regarding Eden's
multiple personalities. Marcy Walker then announced her departure
from SB to star on the new primetime series Palace Guard.
The anticipated romance between Cruz and Suzanne (Terri
Garber) was not enough to fill the void left by super couple
Cruz and Eden.
Roscoe Born left the series, while
Carrington Garland was replaced by Y&R actress Eileen
Davidson. Louise Sorel was also fired, just as the character
of Warren Lockridge returned to the fold in the guise of former GH
star Jack Wagner.
The show later traveled to Russia, where Warren interviewed
real-life citizens. |
|
| The Dobsons were ousted again,
as many NBC affiliates began dropping SB for local
programming. Rumors ran rampant that the show would be axed in
July, but it was eventually given a six-month stay of execution.
Former Guiding Light scribe Pam Long took over as
headwriter and created the role of Jodie Walker for GL star
Kim Zimmer. Slowly,
the show's spotlight shifted from the Capwells to Jodie's family,
the dysfunctional Walker clan.
The most powerful storyline under Pam
Long's direction was the tale of child molestation involving
Jodie's daughter, B.J. Walker (Sydney
Penny). Meanwhile, Cruz became romantically involved with
sister-in-law Kelly, but that storyline was a major bomb with
viewers.
A Martinez left the show for a role on
the primetime series L.A. Law. Top name talent such as Thaao
Penghlis (Days of Our Lives), Charles Grant (Another
World) and Stephen Nichols (Days) joined the cast
during what would turn out to be SB's last year on the air.
None of them could replace the affection viewers had for A
Martinez, or save the show from being cancelled.
NBC announced SB's cancellation in
October – despite the show's continuing international
popularity. Although January 15, 1993 was the day slated for
the final episode, there was briefly some discussion that one
major network and several cable stations were interested in
picking up the series. |
|
| In the final episode, B.J.
ventured into holy matrimony with Warren Lockridge and the show
concluded with the wedding guests dancing to the song Don't Say
Goodbye, which had been written by the show's music producer,
Dominic Messenger, specifically for the last episode. As the song
came to an end, fans got to see faces of the people behind the
scenes, including Jerome and Bridget Dobson. The final shot was of
executive producer Paul Rauch stepping into the spotlight on a
bare soundstage and rubbing out his cigarette butt... |
